That website talks about Wikileaks and the controversy behind it. I think it’s interesting because of the fact that the governments are so aggressive when dealing with leaked information. At the bottom of the page, it says “…it’s public data…it belongs in the public domain…information should be free…if it’s out in the open…it should [do the] public good.” This person believes that all information, no matter what it is, should be completely public and free to everyone, regardless of what they plan on doing with it.
I’m not saying I completely agree with him; government information that falls into the wrong hands could spell disaster as terrorists learn key information about our country. But I think to a lesser extent, he’s right. It is just information, it’s not a physical product. I don’t know why anybody would want to know specifically about some of the stuff on Wikileaks (it just doesn’t pertain to me, is all), but as long as there is internet, and there is classified information on that internet, someone will be working towards exposing that information and trying to make it public and free.
I’m interested in seeing where Wikileaks will go with Julian Assange now in trouble with the law for unrelated charges. I know someone else might step up and lead if he ends up unable to continue it, but what if that new person is even more aggressive than Julian when dealing with classified information? What if something leaks that truly could cause a terrorist attack on the United States? I’m sure there has been plenty of information like that leaked before, but it’s only a matter of time before someone does something with it that could harm the country.
