Theater of the Opressed   Leave a comment

I’ve never been terribly good at metaphors, so it was a bit confusing for me, but I did find it interesting that this person ran for government in Brazil as an “act of theatre”, and actually was elected. It really could be basically a play that breaks the fourth wall by allowing the audience to participate and intervene at different points in the show. “Thus, while the audience writes the work the actors perform it simultaneously.” I think this is a good quote to pull from the reading, because it’s simple and explains it pretty well. The government officials are supposed to be representatives, which is exactly what the actor would be if he or she were performing the work of the audience simultaneously as they write it.

Another thing I thought was interesting was the upper-middle class girl and the experiments in general. The girl didn’t change the tied up figures and said that they didn’t fit in. It really is amazing how what we think is affected so much by our social and economic statuses. Some people changed the authority figures, some changed the victims, but no matter who changed what, based on the statuses of the people being tested, the results were constant.
